About the Event
Drinks and Inks Art Classes
At SenOpsis's art classes everyone is welcome to come and get their sketch on.
Casual, social, arty - explore art in all it's glorious forms. In The Style Of at SenOpsis blend art history with technique and learning while we create works inspired by the artist in focus. Our classes tend to focus on women artists as a way of re-visiting the history of art through and the important contributions of women to our expressive history. While we get our own creative on we learn about various theories, movements and influences, as well as techniques for actually making art as well as finding inspiration.
What to bring:
+ Your own booze
+ Art materials
+ Cafe-style drinks
How do the classes work:
You arrive and meet the other creative souls as we make you a cup of tea and get you some snacks.
The class starts with a mini-art history lesson on the artist in focus (why they're cool), then we do some warm-up sketches, do a collaborative work (we each start a piece and pass it around the room so everyone has had a chance to contribute to everyone else's work) and finish off with a canvas of your own to take home.
Artist in focus: Helen Frakenthaler & Colour Field Painting
Helen Frakenthaler's artistic career spanned six decades and covered a wide variety of abstraction and expressionism. But what we're going to focus on is her Colour Field paintings. We'll be learning about colour theory as we go as well as a focus on composition and playful application of colour and spontaneity.
SenOpsis is located at 3/810 Hunter St Newcastle West, on the corner of Florence St. We are the first block after the Newcastle Interchange on Hunter St, and there's a bus stop directly out the front of the gallery so it's super easy to public transport it in. If you're driving in there is free on-street parking after 12pm on Saturdays on Hunter St and on the surrounding blocks, but if you prefer a parking station there is one behind the old Spotlight building that is $8 for the whole day, and there is one at the Newcastle Interchange (entrance from Maitland Rd) that has $5 all-day parking on weekends.
We cannot wait to see you there!
